Getting Started

At Home Speech & Language Services Inc. is committed to providing the highest quality of personalized services for children experiencing speech, language, and communication problems, within a family-centered approach. Our Speech-Language Pathologists are nationally certified and follow the code of conduct as stipulated by our national association, Speech-Language Audiology Canada (SAC).

Please call 902-292-8799 or Contact Us to book an initial in-home assessment appointment for your child. You will be asked to complete an intake form, consent form, and a payment agreement. These forms can be e-mailed to you, and please have these completed for the initial assessment visit. Please also verify your medical insurance plan for coverage. Some insurances may require a physician’s note.

Initial Assessment Visit

The initial assessment visit is typically one hour in length. There will be a parent/caregiver interview to obtain medical history and to identify specific concerns. Reports/results from other health professionals provide important background information. Direct assessment is then initiated with your child. In some cases, formal speech/language testing is recommended. Children who present with difficulties in a number of developmental areas usually require formal assessment conducted over several sessions. The child’s level of attention and fatigue must also be considered.

Therapy Sessions

Your Speech-Language Pathologist will discuss with you during the first visit whether or not further assessment is recommended for your child, and whether regular therapy sessions are recommended. Therapy sessions are tailored to suit the needs of each child/student. Parents/caregivers participate during therapy sessions and learn important strategies and techniques. As a parent/caregiver, your involvement is essential, and frequent practice is always recommended in order for your child to achieve progress. We work with you to establish specific and functional goals for your child, provide the necessary practice materials and techniques, and carefully monitor progress. Treatment sessions are typically one hour in length, however shorter sessions are sometimes recommended depending on the nature of your child’s difficulties and his/her attention span. The frequency and number of treatment sessions will depend on the child’s individual needs, and as recommended by your therapist.

Fees for Clinical Services

The standard clinical rate is $120.00 per clinical hour as of January 1, 2022. Shorter therapy sessions, if indicated, will be billed at a lesser rate, and please discuss this with your Speech-Language Pathologist. Travel to you is free within Halifax Regional Municipality, and our clinicians strive to offer our clients preferred times while coordinating by location. Travel charges to clients outside the HRM must be negotiated with the practice owner. Prompt payment is required following a session. Acceptable payment methods include: cash, check (made out to “At Home Speech & Language Services”), or credit card. Receipts will be issued promptly. Clients are responsible for verifying their health coverage plans, and for submitting receipts for reimbursement.

Cancellation Policy

Clients are required to provide at least 24 hours notice to cancel an appointment. Failure to inform the practice will result in a 50% charge of the planned fee.
